Who Is Mould King? The Brand Behind Motorized Building Sets

Mould King is a building set brand from Chenghai in Shantou, China, founded in 2012. It's best known for motorized and remote-control models, like working engines, cranes, excavators and trains, built with Technic-style parts and powered by its own battery and remote system. Its range also includes cars, ships, theme park rides and botanicals.

Who is Mould King?

Mould King comes from Chenghai, a district of Shantou that is home to many of China's toy makers. Since starting out in 2012, it has built a catalog of hundreds of sets, from small cars to builds with many thousands of pieces.

What sets Mould King apart is movement. A large part of its range is motorized, and many sets can be driven or operated by remote control. It's one of several brands we cover in our guide to building brands beyond LEGO, and you can see how it fits into the wider market in LEGO and beyond: the world of building brands.

What is Mould King known for?

  • Motorized and RC models: cranes, excavators, trucks and cars you can drive and operate, plus engines and trains that move under their own power.
  • Working engines: brick-built V8, W16, radial and turbine engines with moving pistons and parts.
  • Technic-style engineering: gears, axles, pins and beams with working mechanical functions.
  • Very large builds: some sets run to thousands of pieces and make big display models.
  • A wide range of themes: trains, pirate ships, theme park rides, mechanical gadgets, botanicals and more.

How do Mould King's motorized sets work?

Mould King uses its own power system. Most motorized sets run on power modules that combine a battery box and receiver, connected to motors inside the model and controlled with a remote. Some modules can also be controlled from a smartphone app.

How much electronics you get depends on the set:

  • Fully motorized or RC sets include the motors, power module and remote in the box.
  • Static versions of some models are sold separately and come without electronics. For example, the Liebherr R 9800 comes as both a static mining excavator and a version with motors.
  • Upgrade parts like motors and battery boxes can sometimes be added later. See our power function collection.

Our guide to static, motorized and RC sets explains the differences if you're choosing between versions.

Are Mould King sets compatible with other brands?

Mould King bricks and Technic-style parts follow the standard building system used by most major brands, so they generally connect with parts from other brands. Grip and color can vary slightly, which is normal when mixing brands.

The electronics are a different matter. Mould King's motors, power modules and remotes are designed to work together and aren't built to work with other brands' power systems. Our building brick compatibility guide covers bricks and parts, and our guide to motor and power system compatibility explains why electronics don't mix as easily.

Who are Mould King sets best for?

  • Builders who want movement: RC machines, working engines and motorized trains.
  • Fans of mechanics: gearboxes, pistons and working functions you can see in action.
  • Collectors of big display pieces: large ships, cranes and locomotives.
  • Anyone after a lighter build: botanicals and smaller cars make easier projects.

Big motorized sets can be demanding, with long builds and wiring steps, so they suit patient builders. If you're curious why so many adults are taking on projects like these, see why adults are getting into building sets.

What should you check before buying a Mould King set?

  • Check which version you're buying. Some models come in static and motorized versions with different set numbers, so compare the set number and product details.
  • Check what powers it. Confirm whether motors, a power module and a remote are included, and what batteries or charging it needs.
  • Check the size. Large cranes, ships and locomotives need a lot of space. Our guide to understanding scale helps you judge how big a model will be.
  • Plan for display and dust. An acrylic display case protects smaller builds. For bigger ones, see how to display your builds like a pro.
